Zhejiang Alipay Internet Technology, the online payment subsidiary of e-commerce behemoth Alibaba Group, has announced that its payment website will support Mozilla’s Firefox browser, making Alipay one of the first Chinese online payment platforms to fully support non-Microsoft browsers.

Users of Firefox 1.5, 2.0 and 3.x editions can install Alipay’s security control program that is specially designed for the Firefox browser through an automatic installation function and all of Alipay’s functions will be available to them. At present, Mozilla has started to provide the download service of Alipay’s security control program on its official website.

At the same time, Alibaba’s other subsidiary Taobao.com is developing relevant plug-ins for its instant messaging software, Taobao Wangwang. After completion, users of the Firefox browser will be able to enjoy the same online shopping experience created by Taobao.com, Wangwang and Alipay as users of the Internet Explorer browser.

In addition, Alipay has launched a multi-browser plan and the third-party payment platform will soon support more non-Microsoft browsers, including Google’s Chrome and Apple’s Safari.(from Chinatechnews.com)

Don’t miss Tangos’s piece on a very interesting new (though not unexpected) development in the ongoing throw-down between Baidu and Alibaba. After announcing that they’d be getting into the B2B and B2C ecommerce businesses last year and going into an invite-only Beta just weeks ago, Baidu has now announced an online payment system called Baifubao to challenge Alipay, and a C2C platform to take on Alibaba’s dominant Taobao. Things will get very, very interesting I suspect. Baidu is such an incredibly powerful brand in the Internet, and dominating search as it does it will be able to acquire customers with real ease. Taobao, as you’ve likely already heard, has begun blocking spiders from other search engines — a direct slap at Baidu.(from Ogilvy China)

At the tenth anniversary of Cisco’s (CSCO) China Networking Academy held in Chengdu, Sichuan, the company announced that it would further enhance cooperation with the Sichuan government and Sichuan Education Department to establish 50 new academies in the next three years to realize 100% coverage of this project in Sichuan’s institutes of higher learning.

The Cisco Networking Academy project entered China in 1998. By cooperation with universities and institutes, the project aims to train senior network technology professionals with the help of its advanced network materials and the world’s top e-learning platform. Over the past ten years, Cisco has established over 200 such academies in 70 Chinese cities, in which about 100,000 students have been trained.

Cisco plans to build 300 new networking academies in China in the next three years, of which 50 will be located in Sichuan. At the same time, it will enlarge the number of its cooperated universities from 139 to over 220. By 2011, the total number of Cisco Networking Academy in China is expected to be over 500, providing about 100,000 new IT talents and 200 qualified teachers for the technology industry.(from ChinatechNews.com)

China’s technology media reports have been awash this week with news that China might soon run out of Internet Protocol addresses, and therefore Chinese Internet users will lose their ability to get online. But now a new wave of reports say this is all exaggeration.

News reports emanating from the 2008 IP Address Resource Seminar held by the China Internet Network Information Center stated that because the current IPv4 addresses were limited and 80% of the final allocation IP addresses had been used, new Chinese netizens may not be able to gain normal access to the Internet by 2010.

However, a representative in charge of Chongqing’s radio and TV broadband services told local media that while it is true that IPv4 address availability is diminishing, it will not lead to an impossibility of gaining Internet access for China’s new netizens. Internet resources are not like natural resources which are non-renewable — they are man’s creation and man has the power to create more IP addresses. Man has dominion over the lowly IP address, and the shortage can be resolved with current technologies.

Other news reports are seeking to quell the potential unrest of bits and bytes which might be upset by the lack of access. These Chinese news reports are saying that the shortage of IP addresses is mere speculation. In recent years, the equipment introduced in China’s telecom industry can both support IPv4 and IPv6. Once the IPv4 addresses are not available, the operators will start to use the IPv6 addresses, so Chinese netizens do not need to worry about Internet access in China. The unfettered access to the Internet that Chinese netizens have always enjoyed should continue long into the future.

As an upgrade version of IPv4, the IPv6, which is the core of the next-generation Internet’s technologies, can provide adequate IP addresses with an estimated allocation number of about one million addresses for each person around the world.(from Chinatechnews.com)
